This medal was presented to Carlisle United’s E. A. Moffet when the side won the Carlisle Hospital Cup final in 1921/22.
It was produced by Vaughtons of Birmingham, who also made medals for the FA Cup and the Olympics.
Howard Vaughton, son of founder Philip Vaughton, was also a player for Aston Villa and remains a joint goal-scoring record holder for England after netting five times in a single game against Ireland in 1882.
Thank you to George Chilvers who got in touch to confirm that the cup was won by the Carlisle Reserves that season. From a newspaper report George found from around that time, it would appear Moffet was the goalkeeper as he is reported as saving a penalty in a game against Wigton Throstles.
In the 1922 final, the Carlisle Reserves beat Eskdale Juniors.
