This is an original chromolithographed advertising showcard for Dandy Shandy, featuring a player holding a football whilst drinking a glass of the drink.
Dandy Shandy was the product of Duckworth & Co of Manchester and was marketed as “a striking success : the most beneficial drink ever offered to the trade : cleverly compounded from sarsaparilla, nettles, dandelion, and other choice herbs”.
Their former distillery building is still situated on Chester Road in Old Trafford, on the junction with Northumberland Road. The company was formed in Manchester in 1885 by William Duckworth and made flavourings and fruit compounds. Sarsaparilla was a popular drink around the turn of the 20th century, marketed heavily in America for it’s reported health benefits, which may be a reason for the sports focus in this particular UK advert.
