This was the year that saw Leeds United’s financial situation spiral out of control. Club directors had secured huge loans based on qualification for the 2001/2 competition, but knocked out in the return leg of the semi final by Valencia, and narrowly missing out on qualification for the competition in the subsequent season by finishing 4th in the league, everything started to unravel.
The end result was that Leeds’ problems began to spiral, only reaching the Europa League the following season and then eventually being relegated in 2004, highlighting some of the pitfalls of the huge financial gambles taken with top level clubs – but have faith, they’ll be back!
