One of the most famous cup final upsets in football history, in 1969 3rd Division Swindon Town made Arsenal look like the lower league side as they thrashed them 3 – 1 at Wembley.
This pack includes an official programme and sheet of Swindon Town FC autographs, as well as a celebratory ‘Way to Wembley’ booklet.
Fortune clearly did not favour Arsenal in the run up to the final. They lost 8 players to flu as they hoped to avoid a repeat of their 1968 final to Leeds United.
Add to that a very wet pitch, which had been somewhat chewed up the previous week during the ‘Horse of the Year’ show and Arsenal and their short passing game were in trouble.
They started well, but a 35th minute error allowed Swindon to take the lead. An all-out defence kept Arsenal at bay until the 86th minute, which led to extra time. The extra time was all one way traffic, as Swindon piled on the pressure as Arsenal tired due to illness and they netted twice for a historic, giant killing win in their first ever game at Wembley.
