This is a 1906 chromo postcard entitled “J. Goodall (Derby County) Breasting The Ball”
It has been used as you can see from the message on the front, and the rear is stamped with a 1906 Hailsham R.S.O postmark.
John Goodall rose to fame as a centre-forward for Preston North End and England at the turn of the century. He scored 50 goals for Preston in just 56 appearances, and 12 for England in 14. He then played for Derby County from 1889 – 1900 at his peak, making 211 appearances. He is also one of 19 men to achieve the Derbyshire Double, playing cricket for the county between 1895/6. As his abilities faded, he moved on to New Brighton Tower in the 2nd Division, who had a policy of buying ex-international players, and then to Glossop North End. Goodall also managed Watford, RC Roubaix and Mardy in his latter years.
