This photograph was taken shortly after a Zeppelin Raid on Hartlepool United’s Victoria Ground during the First World War in 1916.
Marked on the rear as “for inland communication only” the photo was turned into a postcard.
This was actually the second time that the ground was damaged by enemy fire, as an earlier naval bombardment had also hit the Victoria.
The club was forced to build a temporary wooden stand, and for many years after the way, the board pursued a legal claim against the German government for damages, but were never successful.
