A fantastic pen and water colour image of Arsenal’s former left-half turned right-back George Male, painted by Max and purchased at Christies.
Male played for the club between 1939 and 1948, initially finding first team appearances few and far between.
Eventually he got his chance under Herbert Chapman, replacing Tom Parker and Leslie Compton after being convinced he could make the switch to right-back.
He soon made the position his own, almost ever-present for 7 seasons on the trot in the lead up to war, also getting 19 England caps.
He became the first player in the English League to play in a Division winning side six times, and was the Arsenal captain by the late 1930s although the war took up much of his peak career. He did however make over 200 warime appearances for the Gunners, as well as serving with the RAF in Palestine.
