This badge, possibly pre-1900, comes from a Billy Meredith match worn Wales international shirt.
Outside-right Meredith from Chirk had a long international career with Wales, winning 48 caps from 1895 right up to 1920. His final cap was a 2 – 1 over England at Highbury, his first in 20 attempts, after which he wept on the pitch.
He also played with Manchester City and Manchester United. He moved to United in 1906 after serving a ban for bribing Aston Villa’s Alex Leake £10 to lose a match.
Meredith was often easy to spot on the pitch, as he liked to chew a toothpick during the game.
