Ahead of the meeting between England and Scotland in April 1927, Yorkshire cotton tycoon Tim Paton offered the England players a £10 bonus if they won the game, with an extra £10 for each goal scored.
The incentive must have worked, as England came away 2 – 1 winners, with William Dean netting a brace to give England their first win in Scotland since 1904.
Jack Hill made his debut as Captain, and despite advice from medics after receiving three stitches during the game, he refused to come off the pitch. Scotland’s goal came when Hill was receiving treatment.
