This unattributed England cap was awarded to a member of the England squad who faced Uruguay at Wembley on 6th May 1964.
England beat the two time World Cup winners 2 – 1, thanks to a brace from Johnny Byrne who scored either side of half time.
Pedro Alberto Spencer scored a late consolation in the 78th minute, but the home side held on for the win.
The previous owner of the cap bought it at a charity auction some two decades ago, and believed it to be the cap awarded to Gordon Banks. As we already hold the caps from this game awarded to Ray Wilson, Maurice Norman and Jimmy Greaves, we can rule out these three players.
We are also lucky to have much of Gordon Banks’ personal collection, which was bought by us personally from the player some years before his sad passing.
We are currently reviewing our archives to see if his Uruguay cap is missing. Although ultimately it’s not concrete provenance, it may allow us to rule out this particular cap having been awarded to Gordon.
