This medal was awarded to Everton FC player Warney Cresswell as part of their 1931/2 Division One championship winning squad.
Warneford ‘Warney’ Cresswell was a right back for the club between 1927 and 1936, playing 290 times for the blue side of Merseyside and scoring just the once. He moved to Merseyside from Sunderland for the princely sum of £7,000 and was well loved by the fans as a renowned tackler and a gentleman both on and off the field.
He then went on to manage Port Vale, Northampton Town and Dartford from 1937. After leaving football by resigning from Dartford after a poor run of results, he moved back to his native Tyne & Wear to manage a pub. We believe that this was the Sheet Anchor Inn on Dundas Street in Sunderland, some local people may even remember it?
That year Everton finished two points clear of Arsenal, scoring 116 goals in the process over the course of 42 matches.
