This is an extremely rare 9ct gold medal awarded to Shelbourne inside left Archibald ‘Andrew’ Devine following their 1 – 0 Irish Gold Cup win over Linfield at Solitude in Belfast back in 1915.
This medal harps back to the days before substitutes, so it is quite possible that there were only 11 ever made.
Patrick Corcoran scored the only goal of the game for Shelbourne in front of 15,000 spectators at Solitude, which is the home of Cliftonville FC.
Devine played for a number of teams in his native Scotland including Hearts, Raith Rovers and Falkirk, before moving to Bradford City and then Arsenal. At Arsenal he scored the club’s first winning goal after their move to Highbury. In 1914 he moved to Shelbourne and was part of their only ever side to lift the Irish Gold Cup, making this item that little bit more special.
