Formed in 1870, Darwen Football Club have a long an illustrious history.
They are believed to be the first club to install electric floodlights, and employed football’s first two professional players. They also hold the record for the heaviest First Division loss, 12 – 0 away to West Brom in the 1891/92 season, and also suffered 18 consecutive defeats in their 1898/9 campaign – their last as a football league club.
This is a menu from a celebratory dinner held in honour of the players and staff after the side won the East Lancashire Charity Shield, Lancashire Combination Cup and Lancashire Football Combination in the 1930/31 season.
On the menu for the players was salmon in mayonnaise, chicken salad, fruit & cream and cheese & biscuits and toasts to the King – probably a bit more reserved than the modern day “spraying each other with champagne”!
