After a number of management changes and a lengthy unsuccessful period, Swindon Town were eventually relegated to the lowest tier of English professional football at the time, the fourth division.
Finally in 1985/86 the club went through something of a resurgence in form, and took the division title with a Football League record of 102 points, winning promotion in the process. This impressive points total made them only the second club in English professional football history to score more than 100 points in a season, the other being York City just two years earlier.
The club then achieved a second successive promotion a year later in the third division play-offs.
