The 1992/93 season saw the famous steel city derby played out in front of more than 75,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
The occasion was the FA Cup semi-final, and was one of three trips to Wembley that Wednesday would make that season. To celebrate Bass Brewers in Burton-on-Trent produced a special celebration ale, as pictured below.
Wednesday won the match 2 – 1 on the day, and went on to play Arsenal in a final which was dubbed ‘the longest FA cup final in history’ as it spanned two matches, and a period of extra time. It was the last ever FA Cup final to go to a replay, as from 1999 onwards it was decided that all FA Cup finals would be decided on the day.
In the same season Wednesday and Arsenal also contested the League Cup final, with Arsenal again winning 2 – 1 at Wembley.
