Regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, he played out most of his career at Manchester United making over 750 appearances and scoring 199 goals, during which time he was lucky to survive to Munich Air Disaster.
After a long playing career with United, he moved on as manager of Preston North End, and in his second season decided to become player manager. He played 38 times for the club and scored eight times, before making 3 brief appearances for Waterford United.
