This London, Midland & Scottish Railways dinner menu has been signed by 17 players and officials from the 1932 Chelsea FC squad.
Based on their fixtures at the time and the signature date of 7th January, it is likely that the players were heading for the Wirral and an FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers on 9th January, which ended in a 2 – 2 draw. Chelsea won the return leg 5 – 3 at home.
As you can see, a member of staff had to alter the menu in pencil – clearly no one fancied the mushrooms that night!
That year Chelsea came 12th in the First Division, finishing with 40 points and ahead of Sunderland on goal difference.
