In November 1946, England hammered Holland 8 – 2 at Huddersfield’s Leeds Road ground, with Tommy Lawton grabbing four goals for the hosts.
Here we have an official programme from the game, plus a post-match dinner menu signed on the rear by the England side.
Every few weeks, I have a box of items land on my desk, and every day I try to pick out a couple to add to the site. However, when photographing this one something really caught my eye – the list of directors on the front of the programme, and in this case the name of JH Rayner.
My family hail from West Yorkshire, and one branch of that family tree on my father’s side is the the Rayner clan who happen to be based between Huddersfield and Wakefield, where I know they’ve been for many generations. I know most were coal miners – but perhaps I’m somehow related to a former director of Huddersfield Town too!
I’d better double check, as Leeds United fan this could be rather embarrassing….
