This metal matchbox cover displays a team photo of the 1922/23 Huddersfield Town squad along with a fixture list which runs along the spine and rear cover.
It was sponsored by the Cherry Tree Hotel on Westgate in Huddersfield – the second pub of that name to stand on that street in the town, the first demolished in the 1860s and the second situated next to The Plough Inn and demolished at some point in the 20th century. Known as Cherry Tree Corner to the locals, a Wetherspoons of the same name is now located on the corner of Westgate and Railway Street.
An empty vintage match box is still inside the cover – Bryant & May Pilot Matches which costs a whopping 2p!
The Bryant & May trading name still exists – all rights are owned by Swedish Match, who merged with the company way back in 1926. Liverpool residents will be familiar with one of their buildings – The Matchworks in Garston, which eventually became part of the larger British Match Corporation group.
