This medal was awarded to the Hungarian-born Lajos Kű of Club Brugge, who finished second best to Liverpool in the 1978 European Cup final at Wembley.
Early in the second half, midfielder Kű almost latched on to the ball after a saved shot from Jan Sorensen wasn’t properly cleared, but Ray Clemence just managed to get there ahead of him.
A year earlier, Lajos Kű had defected from his native Hungary. As the final was being broadcast in the then-Soviet state, the commentator pronounced Kű’s name with a French accent so viewers back at home wouldn’t realise he was actually Hungarian.
