The match was one of the most exciting home nation derbies ever, with England going 2 – 0 up inside the first half before Denis Law made it 2 – 1 just before half time.
Roger Hunt then made it 3 – 1 just after half time, before Jimmy Johnstone scored just before the hour mark. Bobby Charlton then sealed the win with 16 minutes to go, but Johnstone pulled back another consolation goal late on to end the game 4 – 3.
