This tobacco tin featuring Swindon Town FC was issued by HW Thomas of the Eagle Tavern in 1895/96.
There is still an Eagle Tavern in nearby Faringdon, but we are unable to confirm if this is the same pub which issued the item.
Swindon had only turned professional in 1894 as they entered the Southern League which had also just been formed. More than two decades passed before the side joined the Football League in 1920.
