This is an extremely rare Ripley Bros trading card featuring the short lived Wigan Borough FC, which we believe was produced between 1921 and 1924.
Borough was the 5th attempt to establish a football club in the Lancashire town and started life in mid-season in December 1920.
They joined the 3rd Division North in 1921/22, and beat Arsenal in their first match as a league club, 2 -1 in a friendly.
The Great Depression meant the club was unable to continue to pay wages, and it folded in 1931.
Wigan Athletic were founded the following year.
