This 1901 FA Cup Winners Medal was awarded to Tottenham Hotspur player Sandy Tait, who joined the club in 1898 after playing 76 matches for Preston North End. Tait later moved on the Leyton FC at Coronation Gardens (now better known as Brisbane Road), before finishing off his career at Croydon Common.
In total 114,815 supporters cam to watch to final between Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United. United’s Fred Priest put them in front after 20 minutes, before Sandy Brown headed Tottenham level to make it 1 – 1 by half time.
Early in the second half Sandy Brown scored another to put Spurs ahead, but with Sheffield pressing for the equaliser, Walter Bennett scored a headed goal and the match finished 2 – 2.
The replay was held shortly after at Burnden Park in Bolton in front of just 20,470 fans. With a 3 – 1 win, Spurs became the first non-league side to win the FA Cup. Pinching the second goal for Spurs, Sandy Brown also became the first player in history to score in every round of the competition, netting a total of 15 goals in the FA Cup alone that season.
