This training jersey was worn during the 1950s by West Germany manager Sepp Herberger.
Herberger was a member of the Nazi party from 1933 and became manager for Germany in 1936 after they lost to Norway at the Olympics in Berlin.
His re-appointment as manager of the West German national side in 1950 caused something of a stir, as did his appointment to the Germany’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
Under his stewardship, West Germany won the 1954 World Cup in the ‘Miracle of Bern’ final.
Sepp remained as manager until 1964, and passed away from pneumonia in 1977 at the age of 80.
This shirt is on loan from our collection to The National Football Museum in Manchester, along with many other key items.
