This 1922/23 West Bromwich Albion fixture list was distributed to the sporting goods company owned by Jesse ‘Peerless’ Pennington, who retied from playing in 1922 after 19 years at the club.
The shop had been home to his family since 1911, and was eventually bought by Co-op in 1934.
Pennington played an instrumental part in the Bioletti betting scandal of 1913. Pascoe Bioletti approached West Brom players offering the £5 each to ensure they didn’t beat Everton on 29th November that year. Pennington informed the police, who moved in to arrest Bioletti as he met Pennington to pay him his £5 bribe after the game ended in a draw. Bioletti’s son ran a betting company based in Geneva. Pascoe was sentenced to 5 months in prison in 1914.
