This was Scotland’s World Cup debut, and drawn in Group 3 with Austria, defending champions Uruguay, and Czechoslovakia, they played two and lost two.
Rather than the round robin format we know today, the 1954 World Cup saw two seeded and unseeded teams placed into each group, with each seeded team playing each unseeded team.
Austria beat Scotland in a very close game, but Uruguay were a class above and came away 7 – 0 winners to end Scotland’s slim hopes of getting out of the groups.
That year saw West Germany pull off the Miracle of Bern, taking a late 3 – 2 win against tournament favourites Hungary in the final.
